The PDA is a congenital heart defect where a neonate’s ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth. The ductus arteriosus is a connecting vessel between the pulmonary artery and the aorta that allows blood in the fetus to bypass the lungs until lungs expand at the time of birth. It normally closes soon after birth when it remains open (Patent), blood can flow from the aorta to the pulmonary artery.
